If you’re a man who’s experienced stubborn, hard-to-lose fat in the chest area, you’ve probably heard the frustrating term “man boobs.” However, there’s actually a medical term for the fatty buildup in a man’s chest: gynecomastia. The more we learn about male gynecomastia, its causes, and its symptoms, the better we can help treat it.

The Belle Medical team is excited to announce that we’ve recently become capable of treating a certain type of gynecomastia that we weren’t able to treat before. Read on to learn more about gynecomastia and our new, groundbreaking procedure.

What Causes Gynecomastia?

If you’re dealing with gynecomastia, you’re not alone. Studies show that 60% of men and boys around the world develop some form of gynecomastia in their lifetime. Male gynecomastia essentially has two causes. The first is fatty deposits in a man’s chest, often called “pseudogynecomastia,” which we’ve always been able to treat through HD Body Sculpting. In this procedure, we permanently remove fat cells from the patient’s chest and then sculpt their chest area to their desired shape. Because the body is unlikely to create new fat cells after puberty, the results of this treatment are permanent.

However, another cause of gynecomastia, which is often referred to as the “true” form of gynecomastia, is glandular, meaning the fat buildup in the chest is a result of too much estrogen in the male body. An increase in estrogen can be caused by many different factors: pollution, plastics, pesticides, and even certain medications. As estrogen in the body increases, testosterone decreases, which signals to the body to increase the size of the breast tissue in the chest. In cases of tissue-based gynecomastia, no amount of dieting or exercise will help. Luckily, we have a solution.

How We Treat Male Gynecomastia

Until now, Belle Medical was only able to treat male gynecomastia caused by fatty deposits in the chest area. Recently, though, we developed a procedure that allows us to remove the gland that is responsible for the tissue-based, “true” gynecomastia caused by increased estrogen in the body.

Previously, removing glandular gynecomastia required extensive surgery performed by a specialist outside of the Belle team. Traditional tissue-based gynecomastia surgery involves general anesthetic and often requires multiple visits over a span of five or six weeks, not to mention the extra weeks (or even months) it takes to recover from such an invasive procedure.

Belle is now able to remove glandular gynecomastia in-house using techniques that are just as fast, simple, and minimally invasive as our standard HD Body Sculpting and Fat Transfer treatments. Our patients get excellent results in a fraction of the time traditional surgery would take, and their cost savings are significant as well. This procedure is an exciting solution for men who have suffered years of insecurity and low self-esteem due to gynecomastia.
