A new year is on the way—a new decade, too. If you’re like most people, you make resolutions every year. You plan to keep them at first, but something always goes wrong. Many people make the mistake of being too ambitious with their resolutions. If you don’t exercise now, for example, pledging to hit the gym for an hour each day probably won’t work out.

We want all of our patients, past, present, and future, to live their best lives. That’s why we’ve created this list of seven realistic goals that can make a positive change in your life during the first year of the 2020s:

1) Laugh!
The proverb says laughter is the best medicine. That doesn’t mean you should stop taking any prescriptions, but studies have shown that a hearty laugh can deliver health benefits similar to those of aerobic exercise. Try phoning a friend with a good sense of humor, watching a standup routine, or even looking up some funny cat videos.

2) Be Good to Yourself
Far too many of us put too much pressure on ourselves. When we fail, we are our own worst critics. If you want to live a happier, healthier life, this needs to change. Try something new: Before you get out of bed each day, spend a few seconds thinking about something nice you can do for yourself. It doesn’t have to be big—maybe you’ll splurge on a nonfat latte, set aside some time to read, or have lunch with a friend. Pick one thing that makes you feel good and do it for yourself.

3) Stay Hydrated
Drinking plenty of water is one of the best things you can do for your body, and getting the recommended 64 ounces daily is easier than you think. Start each day by filling a jug with half a gallon of water and make it your goal to empty it by evening. If you don’t drink the whole thing, don’t worry about it—try again tomorrow.

4) Toss Out the Trash
Processed foods are quick and easy to prepare, and a lot of them taste great. Unfortunately, they are terrible for us. Maybe you can’t give up all processed foods, but how about getting rid of just one a week at a time? Replace it with your favorite fruit or vegetable. Eating lots of fruits and veggies can help you lose weight, and they’re high in antioxidants, which help your body battle cancer and other diseases.

5) Clean Up
A long day of work, exercise, and running errands takes a toll on even the neatest of us. Before you go to bed, take the time to wash thoroughly. A nightly cleansing ritual is not only relaxing in the moment but also keeps you looking and feeling better in the morning.

6) Let’s Get Together
The journey to better health is easier when you have someone walking beside you. Try asking a friend to make a change or adopt new habits with you. Accountability and encouragement can help both of you reach your goals.

7) Get the Body You’ve Always Wanted
It’s hard to be healthy when you aren’t happy with your looks. An excellent diet and rigorous exercise routine aren’t always enough to lose the extra pounds dragging down your self-esteem.
